SEEKING: Public Relations Directors

Pride Houston is looking for 1 to 2 Public Relations Directors. This is a VOLUNTEER role which is a non-salaried position. The Public Relations Director will be a member of the Pride Houston’s Board of Directors, governed by the organizational by-laws, subject to our give-or-get program, required to attend monthly Board as well as committee meetings, and report to the President and Executive Director (ED). This is a fast-paced yet rewarding role that requires creativity, excellent time-management skills and prompt responses. The Director will develop strategies to effectively deal with the news media and manage community relations.   • Staff, manage and lead a volunteer team dedicated to executing the responsibilities and objectives of the Public Relations committee; assign tasks and projects
  • Devote at least 7 hours weekly to PR responsibilities
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with media, influential professionals and our audience, the Houston and international LGBTQIIA+ community, while maximizing brand presence on various platforms (e.g. web, TV and social media)
  • Arrange interviews, press conferences, press releases and podcasts to promote awareness of Pride Houston’s mission, events, initiatives and objectives
  • Manage sensitive issues to maintain Pride Houston’s good reputation
  • Work in close coordination with the Executive leadership and Marketing Director(s) to develop, distribute, and maintain print and electronic messaging including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, social media posts and press-related content on Pride Houston’s website on a consistent schedule
  • Manage and build media contacts and relationships
  • Prepare all Organization Staff when needed for press appearances including developing talking points, polishing messaging, and anticipating/preparing staff to handle media questions

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of proven work experience as a Public Relations (PR) Director, PR manager, Press Secretary or similar role
  • Experience coordinating successful PR campaigns
  • Experience in different social networks, including Facebook and Twitter
  • Degree, certifications or training in Marketing, Communications, Journalism or relevant field
  • Proven ability to be a self-starter and manage work independently; have an entrepreneurial spirit

Essential skills:

  • Experience working with nonprofit or volunteer organizations with a focus on the LGBTQIA+ community
  • Experience developing and implementing communications strategies
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Have the ability to build relationships with finesse to “manage by influence”
  • Must be energetic, mature and an effective communicator
  • Have the ability to manage relationships with Media outlets and Brand specific Influencers
  • Efficient in crisis management with the ability to craft responses when crisis occurs within an appropriate amount of time
  • Have the ability to take on speaking engagements with ease
  • Efficient in training staff in effective communication and public speaking
