Rodney Vernon is a native Houstonian and graduate of North Shore High School. After which, he spent six years in the United States Army. He is a graduate of the Art Institute of Houston in Fashion Merchandising and is currently employed as a Menswear Fashion Specialist at Nordstrom Houston Galleria and a student at Houston Community College majoring in Sociology. He served on the Executive Board of the Dotson Scholarship Foundation, the Essence International Pageantry System, and is a State Certified Peer Support Specialist in Mental Health, a State Certified Harris County Voter Registrar, and a member of the VA-LGBT Coalition. He is a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, and actively supports many local agencies in the areas of social, political, mental health, community service, and public relations that support and advocate for the empowerment and advancement of Houston’s gay community.
Rodney’s first Pride experience was many years ago when the Pride Parade went right down Westheimer, in broad daylight, in Montrose which was the epicenter and heartbeat of Houston’s gay community at that time. His fondest memory was seeing other people like him living their lives out loud, without apology. The laughter and joy and freedom just to BE was incredible. Pride for Rodney is the opportunity to embrace and celebrate his TRUTH along with a community of people who share that same TRUTH, in a world that often tells him and us that our TRUTH does not matter. But HIS TRUTH is HIS PRIDE, and HIS PRIDE is HIS TRUTH on steroids. He believes OUR TRUTH matters to US and PRIDE allows US to own it … How cool is that?!
