Pride Houston’s Heritage Gala is looking to help the next generation of community activists and influencers achieve their college dream; educate the public on the history of gay rights as human rights, and promote the value Pride Houston places on academic excellence . This year’s Gala will be held on Saturday, October 5th. It will be a night of Special Guests and Casino Fun. Dinner, the award ceremony and dancing will complete this special evening $10K in scholarship money will be awarded to 8 LGBTQIA+ high school seniors and college students. Christina Wells is a singer, actress and inspirational speaker from Houston, TX. After years of caring for others as a Registered Nurse, and single mother of her two incredible sons, Christina began to embark upon a journey of self discovery that would lead her to the America’s Got Talent Stage, and national recognition. From her time inspiring others as a Semi-Finalist on America’s Got Talent, to her appearances at schools, women’s conferences and benefits across the nation, Christina Wells is constantly uplifting audiences with her own unique brand of motivational entertainment. Christina was a featured soloist in Super Bowl LIVE! presented by Verizon Wireless and she proudly carries the title of Houston’s Pride Superstar for 2016-2017. Wells was also named the F.A.C.E Awards Entertainer of the Year for 2016! Keynote Speakers: Judge Shannon Baldwin and Dr. Brian Riedel
Community Activist, army veteran, attorney with over 21 years experience practicing law, Judge for Harris County Criminal Court No 4 and part of the Historic “Houston 19”. Founding board member of the Truth Project Texas, Inc an organization that educates and mobilizes LGBTQ+ communities of color and their allies through social arts and promotes mental, emotional, and sexual health, member of Delta Sigma Theta, endorsed by the GLBT caucus and The Victory Fund. Brian Riedel received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from Rice in 2005 and was hired by CSWGS in 2008 to manage an undergraduate research program, the Seminar and Practicum in Engaged Research. His own research and teaching interests include: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer social movements; these movements’ complex relationships to feminism and feminist studies; oral and archival history preservation; community engaged research; and the concepts of place and collective memory.
Poet Xach Blunt
Xach Blunt is an artist, writer, and lifetime learner who devotes himself to growth within his artistry by studying those who came before, those who currently exist, and those who will emerge after him as working artists. Xach considers his work a true representation of the self.He prides himself on the ways authenticity finds the pages and canvases through the markings made upon them. He knows his stories are dynamic in both subject matter and emotional range and uses this to portray empathy throughout the many archetypes his personhood holds. Xach Blunt is a 2 time Write About Now poetry national slam team member, 2017 Texas Grand Slam Poetry Festival finalists, and 2017 Texas Tea champion. His work and collaborations have been featured on Afro Punk, We Are Mitu, and Write About Now.

JOHN GRIMMETT (b. 1988) is a composer, writer, and director. His work has been performed internationally by the Washington National Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Panoramic Voices, Nautilus Music Theater, and the Baltic Chamber Opera Theatre as well as at universities and conservatory training programs at the University of Houston, New York University, and Indiana University, among others.
